Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech is Morocco’s sensory capital, where a UNESCO-listed medina, palm-lined boulevards, and Atlas Mountain day trips all sit within an hour of the airport. Come for craft souks and tiled courtyards, then balance it with gardens, galleries, and calm hotels in the Ville Nouvelle.

Weather

Dry and sunny for most of the year. Spring and late autumn feel ideal, while July and August are scorching and midday sightseeing is uncomfortable.

Where to stay

Decide first between the car-free medina and the modern city. Riads in the medina put you near Jemaa el-Fna and the souks, but access is by foot and nights can be lively. West of the walls, Guéliz has contemporary hotels, shopping, and dining, and Hivernage concentrates resort-style stays with pools and nightlife close to Avenue Mohammed VI.

Neighborhoods to compare

  • Medina: traditional riads, souks, major sights
  • Guéliz (Ville Nouvelle): modern hotels, galleries, shopping
  • Hivernage: pool time, upscale hotels, nightlife
  • Kasbah (southern medina): quieter medina base near monuments

How long to spend

Two to three full days covers the medina’s headline sights, a garden or two, and an evening in Guéliz or Hivernage. Add a day for an Atlas foothills trip, such as Imlil, or for deeper souk shopping and a hammam.
