Weather

Cool, dry months from late November to January are the sweet spot. February to April often brings heat and regional smoke that can dull views and air quality, so plan accordingly.

Where to stay

First-timers pick the Old City for walkability to key temples and the Sunday Walking Street, centered near Tha Phae Gate. For cafes, co-working and nightlife, base in Nimman. Riverside stays east of the moat suit quieter evenings and easy market access, while the Night Bazaar area trades character for convenience and late trading.

Neighborhoods to compare

  • Old City (inside the moat): Historic temples, walking access, first visits
  • Nimman (Nimmanhaemin): Cafes, co-working, boutique hotels, nightlife
  • Riverside / Wat Ket: Quieter stays, boutique riverside hotels, access to Warorot Market
  • Night Bazaar (Chang Klan): Daily night shopping, tour pick-ups, straightforward logistics

How long to spend

Three full days covers Old City temples, Doi Suthep, markets, and a craft or cooking class. Add 1-2 days for day trips to mountain viewpoints or Mae Rim, or a longer trek. At minimum, allow half a day for Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
