Weather

Winters are mild and ideal for sightseeing, while summers are very hot. Aim for October to April for longer days outside and clearer air.

Where to stay

Start by choosing the Nile side that simplifies your plans. Downtown and Garden City put you near the Egyptian Museum and handy Cairo Metro connections, amid Belle Époque façades and lively streets in Downtown Cairo. Zamalek, on Gezira Island, is calmer, with embassies, good dining, galleries, and broad Nile views. For early starts at the pyramids, stay in Giza near the plateau. If you want newer hotels, malls, and wide roads, look to New Cairo in the east.

Neighborhoods to compare

  • Downtown Cairo: historic hotels, Metro access, budget to midrange stays
  • Zamalek: quieter base, cafés, galleries, Nile views
  • Giza (Pyramids area): sunrise pyramid visits, family rooms with views
  • New Cairo: newer international hotels, malls, business trips

How long to spend

Three full days cover the Giza pyramid complex, the Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo’s mosques and markets, and a Nile evening. Add a fourth day for Saqqara and Memphis, or the Citadel and Coptic Cairo.
