Weather

Winters are cold and dry, summers are hot with storms, so aim for April to May or September to October for clear skies and comfortable walking.

Where to stay

Choose a base that puts your priorities within a 15–30 minute ride on the Beijing Subway. For classic sights and easy walks to the Forbidden City and Wangfujing, pick Dongcheng. For nightlife, international dining, and newer hotels, stay in Chaoyang around Sanlitun. For hutong ambience and lakeside evenings, look to Shichahai and Houhai in Xicheng.

Neighborhoods to compare

  • Dongcheng District: Imperial Beijing, walkable access to Forbidden City, Tiananmen, Jingshan Park
  • Chaoyang District (Sanlitun): Nightlife, international restaurants, contemporary art
  • Xicheng District (Shichahai/Houhai): Hutong stays, lakeside strolls, teahouses

How long to spend

Three full days cover the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, and one Great Wall day trip. Add a fourth or fifth day for the 798 Art Zone, backstreet food tours, and a second wall hike such as Jinshanling.
